Tabita Trewin

Hi everyone,

As many of you know I sadly lost my amazing Mum to cancer recently. The sadness felt on a daily basis is still very raw. Many of you have walked the journey with us as a family and you all know how blessed we feel to have been given all the extra time that we luckily had with Mum. My Mum gained strength, hope and positivity from those around her. This fundraiser is for Abigail, who my Mum gained so much strength and courage from.

When my eldest son was in Kindergarten, his classmate and friend, Abigail was diagnosed with brain cancer. My children were born into a family not knowing anything different than dealing with cancer, and my son already knew in Kindergarten, what dealing with cancer was going to mean for his friend and her family whom he had known since playgroup (2 year olds).

Vicki (Abigail’s Mum) and I were talking about things the other day and we both said we feel that our journeys with cancer have been so similar, yet so different. Similar knowing how much love, care, support and hope we all have felt in amongst each other’s journey’s, but different in the cancer and treatments, time frames, fears, worries, heart-aches - to list a few. Mum used to always say that she was so inspired by Abigail’s strength, determination and courage at such a young age and that childhood cancer truly was not fair.

October 21st 2019 is an important date for Abigail and her family. It will mark 6 years since they were told beautiful Abigail (then 4 ½) had brain cancer. Abigail’s fight has been strong and she has nearly been cancer-free for 5 years, however she continues to have on-going follow up intervention due to the initial treatment side affects which are life long.

In memory of my amazing Mum and in support of Abigail and her family’s remarkable journey with cancer, on October 21st 2019 I will be hiking with Vicki in a team of 8, attempting one of the world’s most iconic treks through the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area - together we will be completing the Overland Track. The trek covers 65km over 6 days through some of Australia’s most stunning bushland, summiting both Cradle Mountain and Mount Ossa (the tallest mountain in Tasmania), the trek ends at Lake St Clair, the deepest lake in Australia.

For those who know me, you know I love to travel and experience new things, however this will be challenging me on multiple levels. We will be carrying all of our own gear (15-18kgs), sleeping in tents, could experience four seasons in one day and there is no running water - not to mention snakes, leeches and ticks.

This is being done for The Adventurers, an initiative of the Pirate Ship Foundation. This organisation raises funds for vital research to discover better treatment options for children with brain cancer and ultimately a cure. You can read more here:

Specifically though, the funds we raise in doing this adventure will be sent to a new project undertaken by this team. They will study a new treatment aimed at teaching the body’s immune system to recognise cancer cells and attack them as they would for a viral infection. If successful, this approach has the potential to be less damaging than other treatments, resulting in a much improved quality of life for children during and after therapy.

To get such a project underway – we aim to raise a minimum of $50,000 - but of course the more we can raise the better!

Any contribution big or small, would be amazing as I know how heartfelt it is and all Australian donations over $2 are tax deductible. International donations are warmly accepted and welcomed too.

Please support my efforts by making a secure online donation and by posting a message of support. Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to the Pirate Ship Foundation.

One of the things that my Mum always used to say to us was to be brave and that sometimes you need to take that leap of faith in things that you do in life. Mum and I spoke about me doing this trek and one of her wishes was that I continue on living life to the fullest and hiking this trek for Abigail and her family was a must. So in memory of my beautiful Mamma, I’ll be walking with her in my heart and for Abigail, I’ll be walking to honour your amazing strength and courage. You truly are a trooper!

Thank you again from the bottom of my heart and much love xo

        The Pirate Ship Foundation Ltd

The Pirate Ship Foundation is a bold and passionate community that funds vital research into childhood brain cancer through a range of initiatives, adventures, events and partnerships.
Childhood brain cancer kills more Australian children than any other disease.
The identification of improved treatment options for children with brain cancer is our primary objective, ultimately leading to a cure.
We believe it is important for our community to understand the impacts of a brain cancer diagnosis to a child and their family.  Even in the best possible cases, treatments are so damaging to a developing brain that they leave shocking, irreversible and life long-side effects.
We know that together we can support research that will deliver better outcomes and make a significant difference to those children and their families.
Funds are invested directly into childhood brain cancer research programs, including to the Brain Tumour Research Program at Telethon Kids Institute in Perth.
